Sad, very, very sad...

This is a painful post to write, and I contemplated saying nothing here at all but thought that would be a cop out.

On Wednesday afternoon, our beautiful Spencer will make the trip across the rainbow bridge, held gently by his parents (Himself and I) and assisted by Dr. Sue who has given him such loving care for the last nine years.

Our boy has gone everywhere with us since he arrived in August 2008 after Cassie's passing, and he has been the dearest and finest of companions, but helping him on this last journey is the most loving thing we can do.

Last month, moving about became difficult for him, and off to Dr. Sue we went. Tests were done and a small osteosarcoma in his right shoulder was identified. A second set of tests carried out yesterday showed clearly that the cancer had expanded aggressively.

For the moment, our sweet little guy is on morphine, and he is resting comfortably for the most part, but his comfort will be short lived, and we will help him on his way in a day or two. In the meantime, we are heartbroken and inconsolable. A world without our (in the immortal words of Chaucer) "veray parfit gentil knight" does not bear thinking about.

Sad also, as I remember all the times this has been the transition of relationships between us, my 4 pawed friends who have loved and given so magnificently of their lives to me and mine. May this transition for you and your beautiful hound be gentle and full of grace, celebrating all the love you've shared.

Oh, tears in my eyes reading this, Cate. This is the hardest act of guardianship we ever have to do, and my heart breaks for you and your sweet boy.

Hail and farewell, beautiful Spencer. May your journey be gentle, and all your beloveds waiting in the golden fields of Summer welcome you with joy.

Spencer is in distress, and morphine is not holding it at bay, so he will cross the bridge tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. How we are dreading it, but it is the loving compassionate thing to do, and we are doing it.

Stay brave. So sorry for this. I loved the photos of his enthusiasm for the great outdoors and for being at your side. You are joining a club of many who have lost a precious pet.

Cate, so sorry that you have to go through this now... to say goodbye to your wonderful companion, Spencer, who has been with you for so long... It is the most compassionate thing to do - to help him pass over. I know he will receive a loving send off as he journeys on...
Big Heart Hugs to all... <3

Oh what a sad thing. We are all crying here now. A dog's time with us is so precious and so fleeting.

I am sorry to hear about Spencer. I feel like I known him through your posts about all the things that you and Spencer did together. He is a beautiful dog and soul. I know you will miss him. I believe that our animal friends, even when they physically leave us, still stay with us in spirit. Much love to you, Cate.

Ohhhhhh, Big Sister, (((((( Cate ))))))))....

While I'm very glad you told us (thank you!!), I'm so very sorry to hear this sad, sad news. I, too, shall miss hearing about Spencer and seeing photos of him.

I remember your great fondness for his big sister, Cassie, and trust she shall be there to meet him and to help love you thru on Thursday (and probably before that) (and probably after that).

Sending so much love, warm thoughts, prayers, and fierce hugs.

I dearly love you,
Little Sister
who is trustin' in Grace

So sorry. it is an awful thing to lose our furry friends. I've held them in my arms as they go -- at least it will be peaceful. I'm so sorry...

Cate, I want to hold and (((hug))) you - bringing one's pet to the vet for his final outing is just so heart-breaking.... I'm crying with you thinking and reading about the love and utter dedication our pets give us for so many years. I always felt in your posts how Spencer was a very special friend - and part of your love for him is not letting him suffer longer than he needs to. Wishing you strength and Spencer a fine afterlife. Kiki

Much condolence and comfort to you and to Spencer, whom you love so dearly and faithfully. Lost my Taffy 4 years ago and still grieve for her although her release from this realm was as essential as his now is. Sending you hugs, prayers, and prayers for Spencer's spirit as he begins his newest journey.
