Swans on the Rideau river are Mute (Royal) swans, the descendents of six pairs given to the city of Ottawa by Queen Elizabeth II in 1967 to commemorate the Canadian Centennial. The birds spend their summers on the river and return to winter lodgings at the Leitrim nursery when the river freezes over in December.
