A Hat Full of Rain

Snow and subzero temperatures at sunrise, followed by a few hours of excoriating ice pellets, then rain in afternoon and a dampness which goes right to the old bones...

This day has been too scattered and erratic for adequate description, and I hardly know what to say about the weather which has been oscillating back and forth with glee and insouciance, up and down and all over the local meteorological map. Whatever I say (or write) here is going to be wrong, or at the very least least, old news.

The rain beats down and bounces off the pavement, sparkling as it encounters the ground and then travels upward again. Bemused, I stand outside with umbrella, trench coat and wellies for the first time in this shiny new year, and I watch as winter melts and flows down the street in exuberant clattering runnels, turning toward home only when wet to the skin and in urgent need of tea.

Overnight, everything is going to freeze again, and tomorrow the village will become a vast skating rink or perhaps a luge course. There are still many weeks of winter left, and I must not get carried away by a little rain.

I'm wondering if we will have an early spring. I'm in the US Midwest and some geese winter over. They started their territorial displays about a week ago and I've heard spring bird singing for a few days. Today is very Marchlike cool, but blustery with several strong rain showers. Even when that happens early here, we often have a final snow storm as late as March. Spring is close though I think.
