Skies are leaden, icicles dangle from the veranda railing, and there is the steady syncopated beat of rain on the roof. It is one of those liminal November days, when the village is poised on a cusp and cannot decide whether it dwells in late autumn or the land of early winter.
One can say simply that the day is dark and sunless, but there are some wonderful synonyms about: bosky, caliginous, cloudy, crepuscular, dim, drab, dusky, gloomy, murky, nebulous, obfuscous, obscure, opaque, overcast, somber, stygian, sunless, tenebrous, twilight, umbral, wintry.
What to do today? Light, or rather the lack of it, leaves much to be desired, and there is just enough ice underfoot to make pottering treacherous - not a day for wandering about with the camera. When Spencer and I went out a few minutes ago, the icy rain sluiced down the backs of our necks, and the matter of a long morning walk was put aside for now.
Inside, there is morning coffee and a cinnamon stick, a favorite cup and saucer in a shade of green that is lush and soothing and tender, the latest issue of Artful Blogging, a little Mozart on the CD player, and a box of colored pencils in Mediterranean shades to play with. Of chores, we shall say nothing, but there will be scones later in the day, and for dinner something that sings and dances on the tongue and palate. There is room at the old oak table for all, and enough cups to go around too. On days like this one, a girl does what she has to do to light things up.

5 singing pebbles:
I should have said:
An OLD girl does what she has to do to light things up.
It is raining in the woods - but - bitter cold has not arrived.
Enjoy your coffee and your day.
I am preparing food for family dinner.
sigh...so beautiful...it almost makes me feel like trading in our summer
Bosky and caliginous are wonderful words and sounds so different. I can't believe they are the same shade of gloom. I'd love scones at that table!
Kate, you have given me a new take on cold, rainy days. Now I'm looking forward to the ones that are forecast for next week.
