View: Old Barn in the Snow

As cold as it was yesterday, Spencer and I stopped to photograph this old barn by the Clyde river in the Lanark Highlands. In season, the place is home to a herd of Holstein dairy cows and their offspring, but in winter it is unoccupied, and it always seems rather lonely in its snowy field by the narrow winding river. The sole visitation yesterday was by a fox who meandered into the barn to escape the raw wind - its footprints are just visible in the first photo. The building visible over the brow of the hill is an open modern structure used to store hay.

This is what the world looks like from here in December: leaden skies, deep snow (and more snow in the forecast for today), short icy gray days and long inky blue shadows. Under its white coverlet, the landscape is fast asleep and dreaming of springtime.

We have a very long way to go.

Looks so beautiful where you are at. I wish for some snow. We had a touch of it in the city. Not a good snowstorm yet.

When I looked at this picture this morning it reminded me - my new drive will go through the field and past a barn like this. In fact when I see the home in the distance - my home will be situated like this only further back. This picture is so peaceful. Stay warm.

"...short icy gray days and long inky blue shadows..." it is the long, inky blue shadows of this sentence which painted that december landscape for me and stopped me in my tracks. we are also dreaming of springtime because we are true garden junkies. a day without our gardens makes us both a bit hollow. not so long for us. we will begin to notice the climb out of the cold cave by mid february...not an ending to winter, just a beginning of an end. late march and early april will bring some bulbs out to bloom and our hearts will sing with the songbirds.
