For Cassie

You will never be alone, you hear so deep
a sound when autumn comes. Yellow
pulls across the hills and thrums,
or in the silence after lightning before it says
its names — and then the clouds' wide-mouthed
apologies. You were aimed from birth:
you will never be alone. Rain
will come, a gutter filled, an Amazon,
long aisles — you never heard so deep a sound,
moss on rock, and years. You turn your head —
that's what the silence meant: you're not alone.
The whole wide world pours down.

My beautiful girl crossed the rainbow bridge an hour ago.

She is gorgeous. The loss and heartache are profound. I sent a beautiful, beloved kitty there, to the Rainbow Bridge a short while ago. While here on earth, she would hide behind framed pictures if a dog came to the house. There, on the Rainbow Bridge and beyond, I am sure they will know and recognize fellow travelers from the realm of animal and person love, a wordless love, a nearly inexpressible love.....

We can't know why the lily has so brief a time to bloom in the warmth of sunlight's kiss upon its face. Before it folds its fragrance in and bids the world good-night to rest its beauty in a gentler place. But we can know that nothing that is loved is ever lost, and no creature that has ever touched our hearts can really pass away, because some beauty lingers on in each memory of which they've been a part.

I know the pain you're going through, it is great and I am so sorry for your loss.

Cate, you are in my thoughts and prayers today as you have to travel alone right now. I know Cassie is waiting for you and will come running toward you again, ready to explore and run and offer those "doggie kisses" our companions offer us each day. Lynn

I came by tonight to check on you and Cassie - you were on my mind, 2 strangers but not really. We are all connected by threads which may be invisible at times and quite apparent at others. Tears fall as I write. I revisit my own days spent letting go, the long goodbyes, the aching heart. I send you wishes that Cassie's love will cradle you when the moments feel heavy with grief. Nothing but time will soothe the intensity of this pain and the quiet which may seem deafening at times. What a wonderful life Cassie had. She was surrounded by love, provided for in ways which not only met her basic needs but gave her the freedom to explore nature's expanse. She traveled with you beside creeks and streams, through forests and meadows, climbed hills, hiked trails, discovered nooks and coves, and always knew she was protected by one whom she trusted, the one who adored her most. I rejoice in this life you 2 shared, the love that bound you, and the memories you made.
